Claude Monteux (October 15, 1920February 22, 2013)[1][2][3] was an American flutist and conductor. He played under the direction of many prominent conductors and for orchestra recordings made worldwide. He taught summer courses at the Pierre Monteux School for conductors in Maine and was affiliated with the South Dakota State University School of Music and Dance.

Career

As a flutist Monteux played under the batons of Arturo Toscanini, Bruno Walter, Thomas Beecham, Leopold Stokowski, Pablo Casals, Igor Stravinsky, and his father Pierre Monteux. On the podium he served as Music Director of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (1953-1956) and the Hudson Valley Philharmonic (1959-1975).

Monteux studied flute with Georges Laurent, then the principal flutist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He studied conducting with his father, both privately and at the Monteux School for conductors.

He appeared in concert and in recordings with orchestras throughout the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the NBC Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera orchestra, and guest-conducted orchestras in Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Norway and Holland. He recorded extensively on London, Phillips and other labels, including concerts of music by Mozart and Bach with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields.

Monteux served on the faculties of the New England Conservatory of Music, the Peabody Conservatory, Vassar College and Ohio State University. Affiliated with the SDSU School of Music and Dance, he spent his summers in Maine, where he was Musical Advisor of the Pierre Monteux School, coached chamber ensembles, and worked privately with conductors in their score study.

Monteux died on February 22, 2013, aged 92.[1]

Family

Claude Monteux had three children with Adeline Johanna Schulz Hiatt Peake.[4] His eldest son was born in 1952 in Yonkers, New York. Named Robert Monteux, he is a former professional ballet dancer. Claude's daughter, Sylvia Monteux, was born in 1954 in Bar Harbor, Maine and currently resides in Ellsworth, Maine. His youngest son, Gerard, was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1955 and is now a well-known television sports host and nature photographer known as Bill Patrick[5] and is a board member of the Pierre Monteux School.

Claude and Adeline divorced when the children were young. Adeline, who appeared in Distant Drums with Gary Cooper, later married William Peake, who died in September 2011.[6]

Claude had a granddaughter, Jessica Lynn Fitzsimmons, born in 1982. His grandson Kirk Monteux kirkmonteux.com, born in 1965, is a composer and the founder of mysoftmusic.com.
